Child Sponsorship: Why do I do it?
Janean: Child SponsorI first sponsored Waqo because the Lord called me to consider sponsorship. I heard Him say, "I'm going to change the life of this child, and I want you to join me." It was an act of obedience on my part.
Not long after our sponsorship began, it dawned on me that the dollar a day that I was putting aside, while almost unnoticeable to me, put food in Waqo's belly each day. It assured that he received medical care after suffering from malnutrition. It purchased his school uniform and supplies and paid his school fees, so that he is now receiving an education. Education breaks the cycle of poverty, creating a future of hope for Waqo and his family. I continue to sponsor Waqo because each of those things is an immeasurable blessing to him. But I am blessed as well. I am getting to know this precious child through his letters and reports. I get to hear about the important events in his life and then pray for him. Most exciting for me, twice now I have been able to visit him. To have him wrap his arms around me and say "I love you" was the sweetest blessing of all! The last time I visited Waqo, he hung his head and wouldn't look me in the eyes. The translator whispered, "He is overwhelmed with emotion because you are here, but he is afraid you will be ashamed of him because he is crying." Now, I will continue to sponsor Waqo until he realizes that he is not a source of embarrassment or shame. I'll sponsor him until he knows that he is loved and valued and a source of joy. Someday, Waqo will reach out his hand to help another child in need, and that will be the gift for both of us. |
